Hoffman Estates Fire Department responded to a structural collapse at the former Menards building at Higgins Road, just east of Barrington Road (2300 East Higgins Road) at about 4:00 p.m. Tuesday. Early reports are that one person was trapped under collapsed debris, and was extricated from the debris by 4:50 p.m. The extra alarm box for technical rescue was struck out at 4:54 p.m.

Fire Departments from Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove, Palatine, Palatine Rural, Schaumburg, South Barrington, Streamwood and other communities are responded to assist Hoffman Estates. The rescue site is directly across from Hoffman Estates Fire Station 22.

A part of the building (north wall) is still unstable, and a collapse zone has been setup. The building was set for demolition, and the demolition is going to continue this evening.

Some crowd control procedures are underway for bystander safety — particularly at Blackberry Lane and Harwington Place.

Plote Construction Mulch, Tire Fire: Heavy Smoke Near I-90, Sears Centre Arena, Hoffman Estates, Elgin, South Barrington

VIDEO: Large smoke/header in the sky near Sears Centre Arena and Life Changers International Church at Plote Construction. Video begins with view from Payton Hill in Arlington Heights — 13 miles away.

Hoffman Estates Fire Department fought a large fire in a mulch and tire pile at the Plote Construction property near Interstate 90 and Beverly Road at Prairie Stone Parkway most of the day Sunday. Life Changers Church sits on the nearest property to the Plote Construction property, but was not threatened. Many people took time to watch the fire and smoke from the back of the church — many with video cameras and cellphone cameras aimed to the west. The header from the fire was visible as far as Arlington Heights at Payton Hill near Nickol Knoll Golf Course. The view of the smoke on Interstate 90 was an ominous backdrop behind Sears Arena and a Hoffman Estates water tower.

Fire departments from Barrington, Palatine Rural, Streamwood and others assisted Hoffman Estates Fire Department either at the scene or by providing fire station coverage for the citizens of Hoffman Estates.

A fire in April 2009 occurred nearby at Interstate 90 and Route 25 on the southwest corner of the property. Rubber mats were burning in that fire.

Migdalia Bloch, 62, of Hoffman Estates Named As Female Victim in Fatal Head-on Crash on Golf Rd.

View Hoffman Estates Crime in a larger map
Golf Road (Route 58) near the scene of a fatal head-on crash.

Migdalia Bloch, 62, of Hoffman Estates, was reported dead at the scene in a fiery head-on collision that also killed Joseph Paliokaitis, 32, who was transported to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, and pronounced dead at 8:11 p.m. A Hyundai, burst into flames in the crash. It is unknown if Migdalia Bloch was a passenger or the driver of the Hyundai. Large pieces of vehicle debris were scattered near the scene on Golf Road about 200 or 300 yards west of the intersection of Golf Road and Bartlett Road.

The crash was located in a sparse area that is near the middle of the Poplar Creek Forest Preserve. The area is sparsely populated with Schaumburg Road and Bode Road bordering the south, the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway purchased by the Canadian National Railway to the west, the Northwest Tollway to the north, and Barrington Road to the east. Golf Road cuts through the middle of the forest preserve as a rural type of highway with only two lanes, except for additional turn lanes at the intersection of Bartlett Road. The speed limit is 55 mph.

The severity of the crash, the remote location of the crash, the report of a fleeing third vehicle involved in the crash, and an intriguing license plate description of the fleeing vehicle (information withheld for the integrity of the investigation), certainly has given Hoffman Estates police investigators a full plate of duties.

Police report that the driver of the Jaguar was ejected during the crash and transported to St. Alexius Medical Center. A woman, apparently Migdalia Bloch, was trapped in a Hyundai, which burst into flames in the crash. The woman was dead at the scene. A blue tarp covered one of the vehicles.

A third person was reported to be injured and transported to St. Alexius Medical Center. There is no confirmation that a third person was transported to the hospital.

There was also a report that a third vehicle involved in the crash fled the scene. Police were searching for a male driver of a 2002 blue Subaru 4-door that was last seen fleeing westbound on Golf Road. The driver was wanted for leaving the scene of a fatal accident. The vehicle and a subject were in police custody about 10:45 pm. Thursday. However, the police have not charged the driver, and the crash is not being investigated as a hit-and-run.

Golf Road was blocked for a prolonged period at Bartlett Road and at Sutton Road (Route 59).

Streamwood police assisted Hoffman Estates police at the crash scene.

Except for the initial investigation of a possible hit-and-run, there is no word of foul play during or prior to the crash. But foul play is certainly something police are working hard to discover or rule out.

Hoffman Estates police and firefighter/paramedics responded about 8:22 a.m. Monday to a report of an explosion or popping noise and a man down on fire with burns with a backyard shed burning in the 1000 block of Hillcrest Boulevard. Firefighters arrived to find a burn victim with a shed fully involved with flames that extended to a utility pole. Firefighters had to standby when they recognized that a power line was down and arcing. The power line from the pole to the house was reported down and Com Ed was requested to expedite to the scene. Once Com Ed workers interrupted power to the scene, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire. Firefighters also alerted neighbors to stay out of their backyards because live power lines were down on a fence.

Before firefighters arrived, a neighbor came to help David Mugerditchian and smothered flames on his clothing after he heard multiple explosions from the area of the backyard.

David Mugerditchian was transported to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, and then airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center’s burn unit in Maywood. He was pronounced dead Monday night at 7:19 p.m.

Mugerditchian, a veteran U.S. Marine, rescued Frank Pacey, 69, in April 1997, also in the 1000 block of Hillcrest Boulevard, by placing a ladder up to a second-story balcony when Pacey was trapped in the second story of his home, which burned to the ground after the rescue.

Fire investigators have ruled out foul play. No word yet whether David Mugerditchian checked on the shed before the power line fell or after the power line fell. Also, no confirmation whether electric power problems caused the shed fire or whether the shed fire caused the power line to drop.

Winter Roads Again: Fortunately It’s Saturday and Most People Are Not Commuting

The outbound Dan Ryan expressway (I-94) was shut down just after 5:30 a.m. Saturday morning after a tanker truck rolled over between 79th Street and 81st Street. The expressway was expected to have at least partial blockage until about 9:30 a.m.

Fortunately in the suburbs many people have stayed off the roads. There were by 8:30 a.m. there were two crashes on Interstate 90 near Mile Marker 65 and Mile Marker 66. One of the crashes was a spinout and rollover. Also a vehicle spun out and ended up on its side off of southbound Route 53 between Rand Road and Palatine Road. No serious injuries reported. Hoffman Estates firefighter/paramedics and Palatine firefighter/paramedics were on the scene for the three spinouts/crashes.

Outbound I-94 at about 79th Street to 81st Street on Chicago’s South Side.

Rollover Crash Kills Two People in Car on I-90 Near Barrington Road, Hoffman Estates/South Barrington

VIDEO: Rollover crash over the median wall on Interstate 90 near Barrington Road when two rollover crashes about two miles apart killed two people in one of the crashes.

Illinois State Police, Hoffman Estates firefighter/paramedics, and Schaumburg firefighter/paramedics responded about 7:46 AM Sunday to a crash on eastbound Interstate 90 at the 62.5 mile marker 42.066578,-88.139508. Initially Schaumburg firefighter/paramedics responded to a report of a rollover crash with a Toyota Camry on its roof at Mile Marker 64.5 in the westbound lanes of Interstate 90. About six minutes later Hoffman Estates firefighter/paramedics responded to a report of a Jeep involved in a crash in the eastbound lanes of I-90 at the 63 Mile Marker.

Schaumburg firefighters arrived on their scene and reported a vehicle on its roof at the 64.5 Mile Marker. Next, Hoffman Estates firefighters/paramedics learned that their crash also involved a rollover and possibly a fatality. Two left lanes were blocked on the eastbound lanes with debris and a Toyota Corolla crashed in the wall. Upon arrival at the 62.5 Mile Marker in the eastbound lanes, Hoffman Estates firefighter/paramedics found two people trapped in the Toyota and one passenger from the back seat was sitting in a vehicle of a passerby. Firefighters immediately went to work with extrication for the two victims in the front seat.

Schaumburg firefighters in the rescue vehicles from were able to clear their call at the 64.5 Mile Marker on the westbound lanes while ambulance personnel treated one victim with apparently minor injuries. The Schaumburg crews headed westbound and made a turn-around at Barrington Road to assist Hoffman Estates firefighter/paramedics in the eastbound lanes.

Firefighters had to cut off the roof of the Toyota Corolla to access the victims in the front seat, but both people in the Toyota Corolla were killed in the crash. The passenger in the back seat was injured and transported to a local hospital.

A light pole and a Jeep were also damaged in the crash. The crash is under investigation, but early accounts have described that the Toyota Corolla was westbound on I-90 when the driver lost control. The vehicle hit the center median barrier wall, and rolled over the wall, struck a light pole, and came to rest facing eastbound in the eastbound lanes. It is unknown at what point the Jeep was damaged. A red sedan with front-end damage was also possibly involved in the crash with front-end damage.

A truck driver stopped his truck to protect other drivers from debris that was in the left two lanes of eastbound I-90. The downed light pole was also partially located in the left shoulder of westbound I-90. A fire engine was used to block the left lane and left shoulder of westbound I-90 to prevent any westbound motorists from hitting the light pole. If a westbound motorist would have hit the light pole, it would have been at risk of striking and injuring rescuers in the eastbound lanes.

The upside-down white sedan on the flatbed tow truck in the video is possibly the vehicle from the rollover crash at the 64.5 Mile Marker.

Illinois State Police are investigating the crash.
